In the spring of 2021, when people around the world were staying at home due to social distancing and lockdown, the new social audio app Clubhouse was launched. On the app, I met countless local and international artists with whom I enjoyed many candid conversations about art and life. (It's a bit ironic now that I think about it...) During that period, I met a Canadian-based street artist, June Kim, who introduced to me the dynamic Toronto street art scene. I was intrigued by her unique and pioneering artistic journey abroad.
In October 2021, when the hype of Clubhouse was dwindling, I got a message from June saying that she plan to come to Korea to see her family and that she hopes to paint murals during her stay in Korea. Without hesitation, I invited her to be the resident artist of Next Door to the Museum Jeju. She accepted and stayed with us from November 21 to 26, 2021.
Born in 1986, June Kim’s Zodiac animal is tiger, just as I. In March of 2020, around the time COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, June started to paint murals inspired by the Korean tiger images from the traditional folk paintings(Minhwa). Amidst the changing social atmosphere and cancelations of public exhibitions and events, it was her way of recuperating. The result is a symbiotic merge between the satirical humor of the Korean Minhwa and the improvisational, anti-institutional spirit of street art. June Kim's Korean tiger that started to emerge all over the streets of Toronto exudes such contemporary dynamism.
In a similar vein, I have recently been imagining an image of a tiger painted on the front gate of Next Door to the Museum Jeju. There’s a traditional Korean culture, now lost, to hang “Munbae-do,” a picture to ward off evil spirits, at the entrance gate of one’s home. Some of the popular images for Munbae-do were tigers and chickens. Last summer, I was working on a drawing of ‘Athos’, one of the hens who lives with us, and thought it would be nice to invite an artist who’d be interested in doing a tiger Munbae-do for our gate.
This is the story of my “in-yeon” with June Kim, which resulted in a tiger mural at the entrance door of the main house. And fortuitously, 2022 is the year of the tiger! As I wish for the well-being of Earth and all living things on Earth, I am happy to share the process and results of June Kim's tiger mural at Next Door to the Museum Jeju.

2021년 봄, 거리 두기와 록다운으로 전 세계인이 집콕하고 있을 시기에 클럽하우스라는 새로운 음성 기반 SNS로 국내외 창작자를 만나 예술과 삶 전반에 대해 허심탄회하게 소통할 수 있었다. (지금 생각해보니 다소 아이러니하다…) 그리고 당시 ‘그곳’에서 캐나다를 베이스로 활동하는 거리 예술가 June Kim을 만났고, 그를 통해 역동적인 토론토 스트리트 아트 씬에 대해 알게 되면서 한국을 떠나 홀로 개척한 그의 예술 활동에도 관심을 두게 되었다.
클럽하우스의 열기가 식을 무렵이던 2021년 10월, 그가 가족을 보러 한국에 들어올 계획이며 한국에서 벽화를 그리고 싶다는 연락을 받았다. 나는 망설임 없이 그를 미술관옆집 제주 입주작가로 초청했고, 그렇게 2021년 11월 21일부터 26일까지 June Kim은 미술관옆집 제주에 입주해 벽화를 그리게 되었다.
86년생 호랑이띠로 나와 동갑인 June Kim은 팬데믹이 시작될 무렵인 2020년 3월쯤 한국 민화에 등장하는 호랑이를 모티브로 벽화를 그리기 시작했다. 급변하는 사회 분위기로 예정됐던 전시나 행사 등이 연달아 취소되면서 다시 힘을 내보자는 취지로 호랑이를 그리기 시작했다고 한다. 그래서인지 민화 특유의 해학과 즉흥적이며 반제도적 성향의 스트리트 아트의 상생적 만남은 토론토 거리 곳곳에 등장하기 시작한 June Kim의 한국 호랑이에게 현대적 역동성을 부여했다.
비슷한 맥락에서 나는 최근 미술관옆집 대문에 호랑이 이미지를 상상하고 있었다. 지금은 사라진 문화이지만 예전에는 ‘문배도(門排圖)’라 하여 대문에 악귀를 물리치는 그림을 걸었었다. 민간에서는 주로 호랑이나 닭 그림을 많이 걸었는데, 당시 한창 미술관옆집 암탉 ‘아토스’의 초상화를 그리면서, 다음에 초대하는 벽화 작가에게는 호랑이 문배도를 부탁해야겠다고 생각하고 있었다.
그렇게 June Kim과 뜻깊은 인연을 맺었고, 미술관옆집 본채 대문에 한국 호랑이의 기세를 느낄 수 있는 벽화가 완성됐다. 그리고 마침 2022년은 호랑이의 해다! 지구와 지구상 모든 생명체의 안녕을 기원하며 June Kim의 호랑이 벽화 과정과 결과를 공유해본다.
