Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, Aracha Cholitgul (b. 1988) is a visual artist who studied ceramics at Chulalongkorn University. In the midst of the COVID-19, she moved to Koh Phangan, an island in southern Thailand. Since post-pandemic reopening, she witnessed the over-development of the island driven by white migrants and tourists, resulting in fast gentrification, increasing amount of trash, and water shortage. Cholitgul told the story of her island with a unique touch of humor in a new drawing series titled“Moving Images of Stones on the Island,” which was featured at the Discovery Section of 2024 Art Basel Hong Kong.
As the resident artist of Next Door to the Museum Jeju for the month of April, Cholitgul made new works as a continuation of her on-going animation project, “Broken Shit and Its Orbit”. Here, “shit” is a metaphor for our emotions, thoughts, experiences, and knowledge that we hold on to but know that we must let go or cut off in order to stay healthy. Inspired by her time in Jeju, Cholitgul introduces a dung beetle in her imaginary landscape, representing seemingly irrelevant beings who play a key role in taking care of our earth.
태국 방콕에서 나고 자랐으며 출라롱콘 대학에서 도예를 전공한 시각 예술가 아라차 촐릿굴(Aracha Cholitgul/1988년생)은 코로나19 팬데믹 시기 태국 남부에 위치한 섬 코팡안(Koh Phangan)으로 거주지를 옮겼습니다. 하지만 팬데믹 이후 백인 이주민과 관광객에 의한 끊임없는 개발과 그로 인한 물가 상승, 쓰레기양 증가, 물 부족 현상에 시달리는 섬을 마주한 촐릿굴은 새로운 회화 시리즈 <Moving Images of Stones on the Island(섬 바위의 무빙 이미지)>에서 특유의 유머를 가미해 섬의 이야기를 풀어냈고, 2024년 아트 바젤 홍콩의 ‘디스커버리 섹션’에서 선보이며 완판하는 쾌거를 이루었습니다.
촐릿굴 작가는 4월 한 달간 #미술관옆집제주 에 머무르며 팬데믹 기간 중 새롭게 도전한 애니메이션 <Broken Shit and Its Orbit(끊어진 똥의 궤도)>의 연장선상에서 작업을 이어갔습니다. 여기서 ‘똥’은 아무리 붙잡고 싶다 하더라도 배출하거나 끊어내야만 건강을 유지할 수 있는 우리의 감정, 생각, 경험, 지식 등을 상징합니다. 나아가 제주에서 영감을 얻은 생태적 관점이 가미되어 눈에 보이지 않지만, 건강한 땅을 만드는 주역인 쇠똥구리가 작품에 새롭게 등장합니다.
Aracha Cholitgul (b. 1988 in Bangkok, Thailand; based in Koh Phangan) has been writing, drawing, painting, and telling stories relating to obscure feelings. Cholitgul has had high myopia since she was young. As a result, the idea of blurriness and uncertainty interests her. Cholitgul usually has the urge to touch things with her hands, and her works always leave a trace of intimacy.
Cholitgul received her BFA from the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand with a concentration in ceramics. Cholitgul’s latest project “Moving Images of Stones on the Island” was recently shown at the Discoveries section at Art Basel Hong Kong.
아라차 촐릿굴(1988년 태국 방콕 출생, 현재 코팡안에 거주)은 모호한 감정에 관한 글, 그림, 그리고 이야기를 만든다. 어렸을 때부터 근시를 겪어서인지 그는 흐릿함과 불확실성을 좋아한다. 무엇이든 손으로 만지고 싶은 충동을 갖고 있으며, 그의 작품 또한 그런 은밀한 흔적을 표방한다.
촐릿굴은 태국 방콕 출라롱콘 대학에서 도예를 전공했다. 촐릿굴의 신작 <섬 바위의 무빙 이미지(Moving Images of Stones on the Island)>는 2024년 아트 바젤 홍콩의 ‘디스커버리 섹션’에 선정되어 선보였다.
