A painting that is also a tablecloth, a curtain, a tent, and an amulet is a painting that awaits to be activated. This painting is meant to be multi-functional and experienced through the different functions it serves. It is meant to be touched by the hand and the wind, to be stained by long conversations with food and wine, and to be entered or occupied.
A painting that is also a tablecloth, a curtain, a tent, and an amulet was activated on July 14th, 2022, during a special picnic dinner for the resident artists of 2022 Art Omi: Artist and special guests. Along with a series of 20 collaborative paintings titled, Painting Conversation, being used as placemates, A painting that is also a tablecloth, a curtain, a tent, and an amulet became a tablecloth. The event was hosted by artist Jean Shin’s monumental picnic table, Allée Gathering, located at the Art Omi Sculpture Park. Welcomed by Shin’s sculpture–a place to gather together for conversation, observation, and reflection–the participants of the event collectively activated A painting that is also a tablecloth, a curtain, a tent, and an amulet, imbuing it with many stains, memories, and meanings to be carried on through the painting.
About Allée Gathering (2019, Salvaged maple wood and steel):
Jean Shin transforms everyday objects into expressions of identity and community. Allée Gathering is a monumental picnic table made out of wood sourced from ailing maple trees at Storm King Art Center’s historic allée. With the outer bark still intact, entering this piece feels like being inside the tree. The work is a site for an ongoing dialogue on tree health and its impact on our ecosystem.
About Painting Conversation (2022, Natural paint on linen, Each 49.5 x 29.5 cm):
Painting Conversation is a series of 20 paintings. Meant to be used as placemats, each painting was completed collaboratively by Yujin Lee and one other person invited to her studio at Art Omi. The process of each Painting Conversation was documented via timelapse video. The 20 participants are Ania Freer, Cristian Chironi, Engy Mohsen, Fawz Kabra, Janie Julien-Fort, Jimena Schlaepfer, Julia Carrillo, Kathy Liao, Laith McGregor, Leticia Obeid, María Ibarretxe, Marija Ančić, Mark Fleuridor, Regine Basha, Sa'dia Rehman, Sagarika Sundaram, Sandra Dinnendahl López, Tessa Ferreyros, Thierry Tomety, Yapci Ramos.
Throughout Art Omi: Artist Residency (June 23 - July 18, 2022), A painting that is also a tablecloth, a curtain, and an amulet was installed in the studio like a tent, creating a private space to host the Painting Conversation, which often brought about an intimate verbal conversation between the artist and the participant.
