Untitled 2022 (Submit to the black compost) is a new work by Rirkrit Tiravanija commissioned by The 3rd Jeju Biennale. This site-specific and participatory installation is housed at the Next Door to the Museum Jeju (ND to the M), a traditional farmhouse-turned artist residency located in Jeoji village. Jeju Biennale’s associate curator and ND to the M director, Yujin Lee, invites the visitors and guides them through the residency space and Tiravanija’s new work made during his residency. The tour will end in a room with a wood fire stove, where the visitors can have a taste of Tiravanija's signature green curry, seokchangpo (sweet flag) tea, and homemade makgeolli prepared by Lee. In addition, there is a special opportunity to silkscreen the title and message of this work, “Submit to the black compost,” on T-shirts or eco bags brought by the audience.

무제 2022 (검은 퇴비에 굴복하라)
리크릿 티라바닛의 신작이자 제3회 제주비엔날레 출품작인 <무제 2022 (검은 퇴비에 굴복하라)>는 제주시 한경면 저지리에 위치한 전통 농가인 ‘미술관옆집 제주'에서 1일/3회 소수의 관객을 손님으로 맞이합니다. 본 작품은 관객 참여형 설치 작품으로 약 1시간 동안 미술관옆집의 주인이자 제주비엔날레 협력 큐레이터인 이유진 작가의 해설과 함께 티라바닛이 머물렀던 공간과 남기고 간 작품을 감상하고 귤 창고를 개조한 전시 공간에 둘러앉아 티라바닛의 시그니쳐 그린커리, 제주 석창포 차, 그리고 이유진 작가가 직접 담은 막걸리를 맛볼 수 있습니다. 또한, 관객이 가지고 온 티셔츠나 에코백에 본 작품의 제목이자 메시지인 ‘검은 퇴비에 굴복하라'는 텍스트를 실크스크린 판화기법으로 직접 찍어갈 특별한 기회가 마련되어 있습니다.

Artist's Statement:
“In my reading of Glissant’s instructional poetics, I’ve extrapolated the instruction down to its bones by which, (submit to the black compost), isolated and taken into the present existential human condition to be a return to the fine nutrients of the Earth. To compost is to make richness from the discarded organic matter, to return a mixture of materials of decay, waste, into usefulness. To see life in decomposition, and take heed the poetic wisdom of Edouard Glissant, to act in poetry as life.”

“나는 글리상(Glissant)의 지시문에서 ‘검은 퇴비에 굴복하라'라는 뼈대를 도출했다. 이를 생존적 위기에 처한 인간의 현 상황에 대입하면, 이 문구가 말하고자 하는 바는 곧 ‘땅의 고운 영양분으로 돌아가라’가 아닐까. 퇴비란 버려진 유기물이 비옥한 땅으로 전환되는 것이요, 폐기되고 부패하는 잡동사니가 다시 쓸모 있는 것으로 순환하는 것이다. 에두아르 글리상의 시적 지혜를 받들고자 한다면, 분해되는 과정 자체를 삶으로 받아들이고 그러한 삶처럼 시를 행하는 것이다.”

Curator's Statement:
Fall 2013, New York. I first met Rirkrit at Columbia MFA program as student and professor, and it has now been almost 10 years since we’ve known each other… 2022 Jeju Biennale. This time we came together as curator and artist, but regardless of our role or status, he treats me, like always, as a fellow artist and friend. Rirkrit has never tried to “teach” me anything, but somehow I am always learning something through him. In this new work for the biennale, Rirkrit projects his practice onto my life, and I merge my everyday with his art. As such, what the audience encounters is a spacial realization of our relationship, seeped into life and art.
2013년 가을, 뉴욕. 컬럼비아 미술대학원 교수님으로 리크릿을 처음 만난 후, 그와의 인연이 벌써 10년을 향해가고 있다… 2022년 제주비엔날레. 기획자 대 작가로 다시 만났지만, 여전히 그는 어떤 역할이나 지위와 상관없이 나를 한 명의 예술가로, 또 친구로 대해준다. 지금까지 그는 단 한 번도 내게 무엇을 가르치려 하지 않았지만, 나는 늘 어떤 배움을 그로부터 경험한다. 이번 비엔날레 작업을 통해, 그의 예술이 내 삶에 투영되고 내 삶이 그의 예술과 한 몸이 되는 것, 그렇게 관객은 우리의 축척된 시간 속 관계를 공간적으로 경험하는 것이 아닐까.

Teach, in other words: learn with.
To live the landscape with passion. To bring it out of the indistinct, to search it, to light it up among ourselves. To know what it means within ourselves. To take to the earth this clear knowledge.
If the solution seems difficult to you, maybe even unfeasible, don’t go shouting out of the blue that it is wrong. Don’t use the real to justify your failings. Instead, realize your dreams in order to deserve your reality.
Exalt the heat and grow stronger from it. Your thinking will blaze. Air-conditioners ought to be detested.
But the blaze fades away. Dwell in the continuum. Let’s tie the ropes again, and search. To be earthen and heavy.
To vomit daily from this common vomiting.
O fallen, isn’t it time you submit to the black compost such pettiness that only awaits your blade.
If you lack skies to dare living, go deeper, leave the spark of words, search into the root.
Then, as in the many childhoods you have given us, you will speak of doing.

가르치다, 다시 말해: 함께 배우다.
열정으로 풍경을 살아간다는 것은 그것을 희미한 곳으로부터 끄집어내는 것, 찾아 나서는 것, 내면에서 불피우는 것이다. 그것은 풍경이 우리에게 무엇을 의미하는지 아는 것이며, 이 명확한 지식을 땅에 바치는 것이다.
만약 이 같은 해법이 어렵다고 혹은 실행 불가능하다고, 난데없이 틀렸다 소리치지 말아라. 너의 실패를 정당화하기 위해 현실을 이용하지 말아라. 오히려 너의 오늘을 마땅히 누리고자 한다면 너의 꿈을 실현시켜라.
열을 숭배하라, 그리고 그로부터 강해져라. 너의 생각이 활활 타오를 것이다. 에어컨 따위는 격멸하라.
그러나 불길은 사그라든다. 연속성에 머물러라. 다시 한번 밧줄을 조여 매고 찾아 나서자. 육중한 흙이 되기 위해.
공동의 토출로부터 연일 뱉어내기 위해.
타락한 자여, 칼날만을 기다리고 있는 그 옹졸함을 검은 퇴비에 굴복시킬 때가 되지 않았는가.
만약 당당히 살아갈 포부가 없다면 더 깊이 들여다봐라. 찬란한 언어는 버려버리고 근본으로 돌아가라.
그렇게 한다면 네가 우리에게 준 어린 시절처럼, 너는 비로소 행함에 대해 말할 것이다.
